Equipping Caretakers, Comforting the Handicapped

Sania* shared her story in a steady but exhausted voice. Her 16-year-old son, Nadeem suffers from a debilitating brain condition and autism, leaving him dependent on his mother for everything. As a widow in Syria, Sania struggles to provide for Nadeem and her two other children. She works at an orphanage, but the salary barely covers her family’s expenses. Providing care and items like adult disposable briefs for Nadeem feels insurmountable.

One night, Sania prayed, “Oh Lord, you know our struggles. . . . And you see my son, the child you gifted to me. He is yours, Lord. I entrust him to you, knowing you will care for him day by day.”

God answered this widow’s prayers through local believers who delivered disposable briefs to Sania’s home. With shining eyes, she told them, “Just this morning, I was wondering how I could afford more diapers. My supply had run out, and I had no solution. But then God sent you.”

She held up the briefs as if they were a treasure. “The problem was solved. . . . Thank you, my Lord, for never abandoning us.”

The treasure of adult briefs

Providing adult disposable briefs may seem like a strange or insignificant way to help those in need. But imagine for a moment that you are the caretaker of an elderly parent or a disabled child. Like many people in your community, you don’t have running water or indoor plumbing. Finding a steady job that covers your food, housing, clothing, and other living expenses is hard.

On top of that comes the care of the handicapped person in your home. You want to provide your loved one with as much comfort and dignity as possible. But buying medicines, disposable briefs, and other supplies in addition to covering other living costs is a daily challenge. Sometimes you must simply go without disposable briefs, using old rags instead. Because the rags are less absorbent, they sometimes cause rashes and discomfort.

From Syria to Nicaragua, Romania, Yemen, and other countries across the world, this is the reality of many disabled people and their caretakers. Adult disposable briefs fill a critical need in these cases and are in high demand nearly everywhere CAM works. For caretakers, the briefs ease the strain of caring for their loved one and lifts a financial burden. Fatima cares for her bedridden mother in their rural village in Yemen. “The diapers you provided were a tremendous help for my mother,” she said. “They have lifted a significant burden from my shoulders and given me the strength to care for her more effectively.”

For the elderly or handicapped, adult briefs are a gift of comfort and dignity. These people are among the most vulnerable in many settings, disregarded by much of society and even hidden away. The fact that someone cares enough to provide a practical gift like disposable briefs is powerful. “You are a message from God with your support for me,” says a recipient in Syria.

Our 2025 budget for the Adult Disposable Briefs project is $1,000,000. If you wish to help provide this critically needed item, your support will be a blessing. In some cases, funds are used to purchase disposable underpads as well as disposable briefs. From Sania, Fatima, and others across the world, thank you for displaying God’s heart for the handicapped.
