Paxton* was an alcoholic, and it was ruining his life. He had called our Gospel billboard number some years ago. “I just want to die,” he said brokenly to our phone team member. “I have tried many times to overcome [drinking] and it’s hopeless . . .” Paxton was just coming out of a suicidal drinking binge with a terrible hangover. Only an immediate call to 911 averted a tragedy that day.
Before Paxton was taken to the hospital for several days to recuperate from his suicidal drinking binge, our team member spoke of Jesus’ care and shared that suicide would not end his suffering.
A week later our team member got a distressing phone call from Paxton’s father. Paxton had ended up in the hospital again. But this time the doctors told him if he didn’t stop drinking, he would die. His body had all the substance abuse it could tolerate.
Paxton had repeatedly said, “I’m not that bad. I don’t have a problem.” But now hearing the doctor’s dire warning, he hit rock bottom and realized his overwhelming addiction. Our team member mentored him and at times attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with him.
Now, after several years, Paxton recently shared that he has not touched alcohol for four years! He asked our team member, “Why did you come see me when I was in that shape? I can’t fathom why you would do that! Nobody else cared anymore, except my father. You didn’t know me, but you spent money and time to come see me.”
Our team member responded, “Because of the love of Christ, I came.”
When our team member first talked with Paxton, he was a strong atheist, but now Paxton says he is searching. He agrees there is a higher power. Pray for Paxton as he seeks for truth.
