Two billboard messages about divorce and remarriage have led a surprising number of people to dial 83-FOR-TRUTH. To test whether these messages are effective, we posted them on a small number of billboards and tracked how many phone calls we received from them over several months. We worried that many callers would be angry.
In the last ten years, no other message generated as many calls per billboard as Where are you going—heaven or hell? But as we tracked calls this year, we soon saw that the divorce and remarriage messages had surpassed it. Some callers were upset, but many sincerely wanted to know the truth. Some were surprised to hear Jesus’ words about divorce and remarriage in Matthew 5 and Luke 18. Phone team members have used these conversations to pray with callers, share the Gospel, send Christian literature, and sometimes point them to a conservative Anabaptist church in their area. Our goal with these billboards is not to highlight the sin of adultery, but ultimately to point to the redemption Jesus offers.
