I Am Thankful

As missiles and explosive-laden drones fly over Ukraine, Russia, and the Middle East, I am thankful to God that He allows me to live in a country that is not under the reality of war.

I am thankful my children can safely play at home, securely go to school, or walk down the street to the neighbor’s house without fearing they will be snatched by kidnappers and sold into bonded labor or other more evil conditions.

On Sunday morning, I carried my Bible into the church in plain sight of all passing by. I never thought I might need to hide it. Though undeserving, I am thankful to even own a Bible. I am thankful I did not have to wait many years for my first Bible to be smuggled to me.

As a child, I spent eight years in a formal school setting. Even though I pretended not to like the last several years of school, I am thankful I learned to write and can write this letter to you.

This morning, I had a great breakfast. I am thankful my children had a satisfying lunch. Dear God, I am thankful my family is not one of the 300 million who will fall asleep tonight with hunger pangs in their stomachs.

The raindrops beat steadily on our roof last night, yet not a single drop found its way inside. I am thankful I live in a house with more protection than a leaking thatch roof. I am thankful I even have a place to call home. I cannot begin to imagine the pain of living under a single piece of tarp under the hot African sun, knowing my house and all its contents had been burned to the ground.

Dear Lord, my heart is pained for the homeless and hungry, the downtrodden and destitute, and the pain-ridden and poor. I wish I could give them a good supper and a warm bed to sleep in tonight. I wish I could read the Bible to them and take them to church on Sunday. But Lord, with you, all things are possible. I commit them to your sovereign care, amen.
