Hurricane Melissa Devastates the Caribbean

Hurricane Melissa, one of the largest Caribbean storm systems on record, brought catastrophic damage to people in Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and the Bahamas.

Jamaica The storm’s 185 mile per hour winds destroyed many homes and businesses in Jamaica. As of Wednesday morning, some parts of the country were flooded, and huge swaths were without electricity.

Haiti Several days of downpours flooded certain parts of Haiti, where people are already grappling with severe poverty and gang violence. According to some reports, more than 40 people lost their lives.

Cuba Hurricane Melissa’s winds weakened before hitting Cuba, where its winds and rain caused yet more destruction. Low-lying areas were flooded, and many roofs blew off of people’s homes.
