Since 2014, CAM has enabled young children in Egypt to attend Bible-based classes through the Egypt Sponsor-A-Child program. Most of the enrolled children come from Coptic Christian homes that have experienced illiteracy and rejection for years. Generations of illiteracy and lack of access to God’s Word have contributed to many families continuing in a cycle of poverty and dysfunctional homes.
Nine years ago, Asiya* was a student in one of these classrooms. Now, she is a teacher in a classroom like the one where she sat as a child. Asiya recalls details of the Biblical curriculum she was taught, and she still has the Bible she received in school. Asiya says she wants to bless other children like she was blessed as a child.
When Khalid first joined the program, he was anxious and afraid to participate in class. “I don’t know what to do” was a phrase his teacher often heard. Khalid was used to seeing violence around him and believed that nobody loved him. But as classes continued, the encouragement he received from his teacher and classmates helped Khalid feel safe. His demeanor and personality changed noticeably. Khalid began to participate in class, focus on his lessons, and encourage his classmates.
The goal of the Egypt Sponsor-A-Child program is to help teach the Word of God to vulnerable children like Khalid. The tools they learn often help change their character and shape them for life. Sadly, many of them lack godly examples. These classrooms are havens where children find hope for the future as they learn to read and write and where they discover the hope in Jesus that lies beyond a textbook.
