Birds sing in the treetops of this beautiful green forest in Haiti. Grass grows underfoot except in places where the canopy is so dense that little grows on the forest floor. It is hard to grasp that this land was once a parched desert. Around 13 years ago, CAM planted a forest on this CAM-owned property near La Source. Today, it is a beautiful testament to what a forest can look like if you take good care of it.
Our Grow-A-Tree program goal is to rejuvenate the parched soil across Haiti and keep it from washing away. Papaya, jackfruit, moringa, tamarind, and avocado saplings are cultivated at our nursery. Once ready to transplant, they are given to people for a small price, along with teaching on how to grow them. Last year, between 90,000 to 100,000 trees were planted—made possible by Grow-A-Tree donors. These trees will provide shade, fruit, and better soil for decades.
