Haiti was once known as the pearl of the Caribbean, with dense forests covering 60 percent of the hillsides. Over decades, these lush forests gave way to eroded barren ground as Haitians chopped down the trees to make charcoal to sell for a meager living. It seems few people thought about replacing these trees. Or maybe they had no way of replanting.
CAM’s Grow-A-Tree program starts tree seedlings for Haitian farmers to plant on their land. The trees stabilize the eroded ground and help cool the soil for a better farm crop. Once the trees mature, farmers follow the instructions they received with the seedlings to selectively harvest the trees for charcoal or lumber. This provides a cash crop without destroying the source.
A Chinese proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” Planting a tree today is possible because of donations you have given, supporters. Thank you!
