Heartbreak and Hope in Haiti

Haiti: a battered country where suffering and heartbreak is all too familiar. Here, families are ripped apart as gangs continue kidnapping, killing, and terrorizing people. Trapped in the middle of this violence are innocent Haitians who pay the price with sorrow, death, and displacement.

Rosanna cried as she relayed her tragic story to a CAM staff member. One evening, her husband stopped at a gas station for fuel. Two gang members approached, demanding all the money he had with him. When he refused, the two men shot him in the back, took his money, and left. His two oldest children saw it all happen.

Later, a gang leader spoke with Rosanna assuring her that her family was safe and protected by the gang. But something felt off to Rosanna. Marco, a friend of her late husband’s brother, helped Rosanna and her children evacuate to his hometown. Three days later, the gang returned to the neighborhood on a killing rampage. They shot more than 500 men, plus women and children. The bodies were thrown into a hole and burned along with tires. Had Rosanna and the children stayed, they would likely have been among the ones killed.

In 2023, Marco and Rosanna married. After living in Marco’s hometown for two and a half years, it became too dangerous. One day, a gang arrived at their house demanding, “Give us your guns.”

Rosanna replied, “The Bible is our gun!”

The family fled to Marco’s relatives on the southern coast of Haiti with some other relatives. They took very little with them and used the money they had left to build a small two-bedroom house. The walls were built, but there was no more money to finish their home. Rosanna prayed and prayed.

When they were told that CAM could provide funds for a roof (about $4,000), the whole family rejoiced. “It’s an amazing testimony,” said Marco. “I praise the name of the Lord. He is the Almighty One.”

We thank God and you, supporters, for providing needy families like Marco and Rosanna with hope and a house to call their own!
