Everything was on fire. Feliks* knew he had to leave to get out of there, but where would he go? If he didn’t leave, he, too, would become another victim of the war. Gone—like so many before him. As he left, the air was filled with the horrific noise of gunfire and bombing.
Countless people in Ukraine and other parts of the world long for peace. CAM’s desire is to help bring the peace of God in small ways by providing things like food, firewood, housing, and other things to Ukrainians who have lost much in the war.
Facing the winter
With winter descending on Ukraine, worry is a constant companion for many. In formerly occupied areas or in areas of recent fighting, the cold wraps its icy fingers around war-ravaged homes and basements, chilling those inside. With job opportunities decreasing and living costs rising, winter holds a sense of foreboding. In many areas, cutting firewood is either illegal or dangerous because of land mines.
Helping in various ways
We are working through church leaders and staff members in Ukraine to provide items like food amid the suffering. In one village, some people hadn’t eaten for three days. Believers were thankful to receive food from CAM which they used as a ministry tool, distributing the food to struggling people in this village.
Firewood is another way we are reaching out to struggling Ukrainians. “I am very thankful for the wood,” said a recipient. “I took it inside to the dry place. . . . Before we could cut some trees beside the road, but now it is prohibited. The only way now is to buy.”
In some places, rebuilding is being done. This can give men the opportunity to work near home. One recipient said, “Thank you very much for making it possible to live in our home again. Thank you, and may God bless you.”
The needs across Ukraine are nearly endless. Housing, food, water, hygiene items, and firewood are some of the things Ukrainians are struggling to afford during this time. In small ways, God’s love is being shown to people whose lives have been marked by the horrors of war.
