Cyclone Freddy pounds Malawi

Cyclone Freddy pounded Malawi and other southeastern African countries in the past weeks, dumping heavy rain. Flooding and landslides washed away homes and people, leaving a trail of devastation. Family members and neighbors watched helplessly as their loved ones were carried away in the floodwaters. The death toll from Cyclone Freddy could be as much as 1,200 people.

Cyclone Freddy’s unusual path

Cyclone Freddy’s path is unlike many cyclones. It first developed near Australia in early February, then traveled more than 5,000 miles across the southern Indian Ocean. The cyclone then made landfall in southeastern Africa before moving back to the Indian Ocean. Freddy then returned to Africa, leaving destruction in Malawi, Mozambique, and Madagascar.

Needs in Malawi

Poverty was already a harsh reality to many of Malawi’s people. Now Freddy leaves thousands without homes, livelihoods, or basic necessities. As many people shelter in camps or schools, the country nears its cold season with cool night temperatures and frequent rainfall. “The need is unbelievable here,” says a contact.
