Kenya

Kenya is a country in East Africa. It’s named after Mount Kenya and is famous for its diverse wildlife including elephants, lions, giraffes and zebras. It shares borders with Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Indian Ocean.

Kenya’s official languages are Swahili and English, the currency is called Kenyan shillings, and they drive on the left side of the road.

Kenya is slightly smaller than the state of Texas and is home to around 50 million people. About 100 different people groups are represented, 32 of which are considered unreached¹. 80% of Kenyans consider themselves Christians while about 10% are Muslims. There is much superstition and witchcraft.

The capital city, Nairobi, is home to one of the largest slums in the world. It’s estimated there are 8 million widows in Kenya and 3 million orphans! Approximately 250,000 children live on the streets. AIDS is a big problem, but there is only about one doctor for every 5,000 people².

In general, Kenyans are very God-conscious. They often go out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. Kenya presents many opportunities to show the love of Christ in practical ways.
