Liberia, meaning “free place”, ¹ is a small country located in West Africa. Slightly larger than the state of Virginia, it is bordered by Guinea, Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean. About 5.5 million people live in Liberia. Although many different people groups are represented, the official language is English. In the 1800s, 15,000 African Americans were relocated to Liberia with the thought that they would face less discrimination back in Africa. But they brought their culture and religion with them and relations didn’t always go well with the indigenous people. In 1847, Liberia declared independence. Since then, Liberia has had a lot of political trouble. Through a coup in 1980 and two civil wars, many lives were lost. Liberia has been fairly stable since 2003, but the violence left deep scars on the country. The wars made many orphans. And although Liberia is blessed with an abundance of resources such as gold, iron ore, diamonds, timber, rubber and palm oil, the economy and infrastructure was set back substantially. For instance, by the end of Liberia’s second civil war, approximately 95% of the healthcare facilities had been destroyed. Then, 11 years later, Ebola came, testing their already strained healthcare system. ²
Over 80 percent of Liberians identify as being Christians, but many are still involved in witchcraft, superstition, secret societies and ethnic religion. ² One source actually lists the Christians (40%) as fewer than those of ethnic religions (42%). ³
CAM’s staff, with assistance from Liberian Christians, demonstrate the love of Jesus and bring hope to many by helping children get an education, giving food to vulnerable children, supplying clinics with medicine, distributing literature, providing clean water to villages, teaching how to save and use their resources, etc.
