“Don’t bring that thing to my house!” Kou heard her son say. But Kou’s grandmother heart could not leave the baby to die.

Her name is Miracle. She was born in the heart of Liberia with a cleft lip and palate and a missing leg. Superstition has many Liberians believing that birth defects are a result of witchcraft. Wanting no part of this, Miracle’s parents simply abandoned her.

When Kou found out about her grandchild, she headed straight for the hospital. Gathering up the innocent bundle, she carried her home, determined to help this child live despite the cost.

Kou had been selling food at a local shop for an income, but this soon changed after she rescued her “untouchable” granddaughter. When people saw Miracle they refused to buy food from Kou’s shop. They were afraid something would happen to them if they associated with Kou and her “witched” granddaughter. But Kou kept loving Miracle. To her, losing her business was small compared to giving up Miracle to die.

Under Kou’s care, Miracle grew healthy and strong. She loved to eat rice with pepper soup. Her bright personality and eagerness to learn new things brightened up her grandmother’s world.

When CAM found out about Miracle, we wanted to help her. We were able to provide her with a prosthesis through the Special-Needs-Fund. When Miracle discovered that she could stand by herself, she stared at her feet, and exclaimed, “I have two feet!”

With the help of the Special-Needs-Fund and the love of her grandmother, Miracle has a chance to live a normal life. One that involves two legs and no more crawling in the dirt. Kou says, “Thank you. May God bless you more and more. I’m too happy!”

“Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 18:10
