Abbar* and his family live in a small one room, one-bathroom apartment, they struggle to survive without a source of income and basic supplies. Abbar had once been a porter and his wife a house keeper, then the civil war came and they lost their jobs.
According to UNICEF, Yemen is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with more than 24 million people – some 80 per cent of the population – in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 12 million children.
When workers recently delivered a food basket to the family, the children smiled and touched the food. “I worried about providing even a piece of bread to lessen the family’s hunger,” Abbar said. “My children might go the whole day with only one meal given to us from neighbors or aid workers.”
As Abbar shared, his two small children stood beside him. Their small thin little bodies were clear evidence of malnutrition.
“The food basket will remove our heavy burdens and meet our needs for a month. You have brought us happiness. Thank you to all those who funded this kind initiative,” were Abbar’s grateful words.
