COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Crisis Care Project - See Current Needs

Romanians who are now in their sunset years endured the hardships of communism in their younger years. From 1948–1989 when the country was under communist control, many people lost their houses, lands, and savings. Some lost their lives.

When communism fell, it brought a sense of relief, but also another set of problems. Government jobs disappeared along with the revolution, taking their small but steady incomes away.

Now years later, this generation has little chance of seeing their circumstances improve. Energy prices keep rising and the cost of living far exceeds their meager government pension.

They need to budget their pension carefully because it is quickly used up. “The older they get, the harder it is to do simple tasks,” said Ellis Schrock, our distribution director in Romania. “Those without children nearby are paying neighbors to do simple tasks like bringing water from the well, buying food, and going to the pharmacy.”

Several years ago a Christian man named Florin befriended Constantin, a 63-year-old homeless man he met at a hospital. Florin fixed up a small corner of his storage shed and put in a bed and stove for Constantin.

Florin’s family has been sharing their meager share of food with Constantin. When Constantin started receiving Help-for-the-Elderly food parcels from CAM, it tremendously blessed him and his giving friends.

Thank you, supporters, for meeting the needs of some of the most vulnerable people our field staff encounter. Each month more than 1,500 elderly people are relieved from some of their struggle to provide for themselves!
