“What are you doing with all these billboards all over Portland?” Marla* asked. “What are you trying to accomplish?”
Our phone team member explained that we are trying to encourage people to get right with God before they die.
“But this is Portland. Don’t you realize—I mean, up here we all have our own beliefs,” Marla replied.
Marla was right. Portland, Oregon, is considered one of America’s most secular cities. Nearly 40 percent of its residents say they are unaffiliated with any religion, according to the Public Religion Research Institution. But in this city, some are seeking for answers.
One caller said, “I’m confused. I don’t know what to believe. Is Jesus real?” What an opportunity to point this woman, and many others, to the Way, Truth, and Life!
The 28 messages scattered throughout the city of Portland are only a small portion of the 479 Gospel signs we have posted across all 50 states. Each day, these reminders about God are seen by an estimated 8.4 million people at a time when they have the most time to think—while driving. Through the thousands of calls we receive from passersby, we are given a window into the impact of these messages. One caller said, “I felt God’s presence when I saw that billboard.”
Please pray for wisdom and spiritual protection for our phone team members as they speak to people who are seeking answers. Pray also that the hearts of those who pass by our billboards will be impacted by the Gospel messages and that God would “. . . open their eyes, and . . . turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins . . .” (Acts 26:18).
