In a country plagued by economic collapse, extreme poverty, increasingly erratic weather patterns, and other upheavals, there seems to be little hope for Afghans. Hunger hovers over many of them as they struggle daily to survive. In a population of 44.5 million, 1 in every 4 Afghans does not know where his/her next meal will come from (World Food Programme).
One woman shared, “I am a widow and I live in a muddy room with three children, one boy and two daughters. My husband was a carpenter, and we had a good life. About four years ago, when I was pregnant, I was driving to the hospital with my husband and my eldest son for a check-up when a roadside bomb exploded. In that tragic incident, my husband, my eldest son, and several others were [killed] and I was seriously injured and lost one of my legs.
“Now we are in a bad situation where we don’t even have anything to eat or wear. I sew at home and try to earn food for my children, but poverty has increased and people cannot afford to buy clothes that I sew. Only if there is a wedding in a village, they bring me clothes to sew, otherwise I am unemployed. I am very grateful to you for coming to our house and observing our plight, and I am pleased with the help you are giving to us strangers. God bless you and those who help us strangers through you.”
