Pandemic deepens Yemen’s crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic is deepening Yemen’s crisis. This country is shattered by years of civil war. The civilian population suffers in this enormous man-made crisis. Now the COVID-19 pandemic adds a new stress to the poverty-stricken country.

“We don’t know what to do”

Dhakir* supports a family of seven. “I don’t know where to go to look for a job,” he said. “I wanted to go to the city to get a job, but was denied entrance to the city due to the pandemic. I tried to go to another city, but could not enter or work there due to the war and the pandemic. Even if I was allowed to enter the city to work, there were no jobs available. We don’t know what to do. How can we stay at home without having enough income for living? This is a crisis and whether we stay home or go out, there are no jobs available.”

This is the desperate story of thousands of Yemenis. To help with the extreme needs, CAM is providing food and hygiene items for families like Dhakir’s. They are extremely grateful for these gifts. Many say they wish they could express their gratitude to the people who sent the items.

“I cried from joy”

“When the food baskets came, I cried from joy,” said a food recipient in Yemen. “I thank God, who guided you to support my family and other destitute people like us.”

The COVID-19 pandemic is deepening Yemen’s crisis. But thanks to the generosity of supporters, we can bring light and hope in this desperation.
