Many handicapped people in impoverished countries have little choice but to crawl on their hands and knees. Some of them wear flip-flops or other things on their hands for a bit of protection. In some places, handicapped people are rejected and hidden away because they are considered an embarrassment to their family. They lie in dark rooms or on concrete floors with no way to get around.

The gift of a wheelchair reduces the awkwardness of moving around and enables handicapped people to get out and interact with others. We used to depend on donated wheelchairs but are now purchasing them by the truckload to fill the needs. In the Middle East alone, thousands could be used for people injured or handicapped by war.
