Untold Suffering in Sudan’s Civil War

Since the outbreak of civil war a year ago, the people of Sudan have endured untold levels of suffering, chaos, and destruction. In April 2023, tension between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into fierce fighting in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. The conflict quickly spread to other parts of the country, including the conflict-prone Darfur region of western Sudan. With little regard for human life, the two military factions have been ruthlessly destroying anything or anyone standing in their way. This includes the destruction of crucial infrastructure. The collapse of banks, lack of water and healthcare, and unreliable electricity and communication have crippled the economy, plunging the Sudanese people into peril.

Millions displaced
More than 8 million people have left their homes, fleeing for safety inside and outside Sudan. Thousands are crossing the Sudan border every day, swarming into refugee camps in the deserts of Egypt, Chad, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Central African Republic. Living conditions are often deplorable, and food, when available, is unaffordable for many refugees.

Humanitarian crisis
The chaos of mass displacement, coupled with scorched-earth devastation has created a critical humanitarian crisis. An estimated 25 million Sudanese people are in need of assistance. Over half of these people (14 million) are children. More than one third of Sudan’s population is facing a food crisis with nearly 5 million people on the brink of famine.
Crowded living conditions and inadequate sanitation are creating a breeding ground for deadly diseases. Last September, cholera broke out, adding to the already-critical health needs of the more common measles, malaria, and dengue fever. The spread of diseases is increasing as health care facilities lie in ruins. In areas of conflict, an estimated 70 to 80 percent of healthcare facilities are not functioning. The few health centers that are open are facing unprecedented challenges including power outages and limited access to water, medicine, and medical supplies.
