Hurricane Dorian made landfall in North Carolina on Friday morning as a category 1 storm after bringing several days of drenching rains to the eastern seaboard. More than 300,000 people were left without power as the hurricane swept up the coast. Dorian brought floods and tornadoes to several areas. The risk of flooding still continues with storm surges and heavy rain in some places. CAM’s Rapid Response teams are researching ways to help those who have been affected by the storm.

Hurricane Dorian delivered intense winds and downpours in the Bahamas for more than a day. Residents sent out pleas for help as the powerful storm battered the island at category 5 with 185 mph winds. Five people were killed, and the death toll could rise as the situation becomes clearer. The International Red Cross estimates 13,000 homes are damaged or destroyed across the nation.
The hurricane has now downgraded to a category 2 and is inching northwest away from the Bahamas. It’s expected to get precariously close to Florida’s east coast late Tuesday and into Wednesday. Even though Dorian’s wind speed decreased, the hurricane is growing in size. Its combined wind, surge, and flood hazards remain the same or have grown worse than before.

Hurricane Dorian is predicted to slam into the southeastern United States on Monday or Tuesday as a category 4 storm. Dorian poses a major threat to those it its path. Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency for all 67 counties in Florida.
